Getting to Know GDPR

On May 25, 2018, a new privacy law called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) takes effect in the European Union. How will this affect your company?

WHAT IS GDPR?

The General Data Protection Regulation is the EU’s new legislation that gives residents of the European Union more control over their personal data and seeks to provide rules and responsibilities for online services with European users. The new law impacts how companies that do business in the EU may collect and handle personal information.

WHOM DOES THE GDPR APPLY TO?

It applies to organizations established in the EU that process personal data and to organizations based outside the EU that either offers goods or services directly to individuals in the EU or monitor the behavior of individuals in the EU.

DOES THE LAW APPLY ONLY TO COMPANIES BASED IN THE EUROPEAN UNION?

No, the GDPR applies to any organization that collects, processes, manages or stores the data of European citizens. GDPR essentially sets a new global standard for data protection.

WHAT DOES GDPR REGULATE?

The GDPR regulates the “processing” of data for EU individuals, which includes collection, storage, transfer, or use.
